"Power without love is reckless and abusive, and love without power is sentimental and anemic. Power at its best is love implementing the demands of justice, and justice at its best is power correcting everything that stands against love."
-Martin Luther King Jr.
Martin Luther King Jr. Day is an American federal holiday as well as his day of birth. It is celebrated on the third Monday of January every year. MLK Jr. was the chief spokesperson for nonviolent activism during the civil rights movement, where he successfully protested racial discrimination in state and federal law. After his assassination in 1968 a campaign created in his honor began soon after. In 1983, Ronald Reagan signed the holiday into law. With many negotiations, vetoes, petitions, and movements, it became a holiday 3 years later. All states had different outlooks and preferences for the holiday, so it wasn't until 2000 that MKL Jr. Day was officially observed in all 50 states as a National Holiday.
